Daughter of the designer and scenographer Norman Bel Geddes, she begins at the theater at the age of 18 years. In 1952, she received the prestigious Woman of the Year Award from Hasty Pudding Theatricals USA, the oldest American theater company. Her two biggest roles on stage are Maggie in Tennessee Williams’ Broadside Cat on the Burning Roof in 1956, and her role as Jean Kerr in the comedy Mary, Mary in 1961, both of which earned her Tony Award nominations. His brilliant career on stage also includes The Moon was Blue from 1951 to 1953, directed by Otto Preminger, Burning Bright by John Steinbeck, Everything in the Garden by Edward Albee and Silent Night, Lonely Night with Henry Fonda … In 1993, having appeared in fifty shows on Broadway, the American Theater Hall of Fame pays tribute to her – a distinction she shares with her father.

Her film career began in 1947 when she played Henry Fonda in The Long Night, a remake of Marcel Carné’s film Le Jour se lever. She received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Tendresse (I remember Mama) (1948) directed by George Stevens. She also stars with Max Ophüls, Elia Kazan, Martin Ritt and Henry Hathaway, alongside Robert Mitchum, Richard Widmark, James Mason and Robert Ryan. However, a shaky health and anti-American activities committee investigation (temporarily) put an end to his film career in 1951.

His career reboots when Alfred Hitchcock offers him roles in four episodes of the television series Alfred Hitchcock presents (whose Inspector sits at the table (Lamb to the Slaughter) after Roald Dahl), the first episode, in She plays a housewife who kills her husband, and plays an important role in the film Cold Suffers (Vertigo en VO) (1958) where she plays James Stewart’s ex-fiancée.
