Weinke is selected in the fourth round of the 2001 draft in the 106th choice by the Carolina Panthers. Upon arrival, Weinke plays fifteen of the sixteen games in the 2001 Panthers season, but the season is the worst in the franchise’s history, scoring 1-15 and Weinke giving 11 assists for touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Nevertheless, he broke the record for the most passes attempted by any rookie with thirty-six per game. He becomes a substitute quarterback and sometimes returns during the match. After playing three games in October 2002, he has to wait until October 16, 2005 to replay with the Panthers taking the place of Jake Delhomme, injured in a game against the Detroit Lions Note that in this match, Weinke delivers a pass for Ricky Proehl to give the Carolina 21-20 victory.
