She made her television debut in 1966 in an episode of the Batman series, and then starred in The Beverly Hillbillies. Her first important character is that of Aggie Thompson in the first cast of the sitcom Doris comedy roles. In 1969-1971 she played Doris Ziffel in the series Green Arpents, replacing Barbara Pepper, who was in poor health and died of cardiac arrest in July 1969.Ryan also held the role of Miss Hannah (Cobb) in the twentieth and final season of the Gunsmoke Western TV series; she took it back in 1987 in the TV movie Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge.
Fran Ryan played Rosie Carlson on the soap opera Days and Lives between 1976 and 1979, and Sister Agathe on Central Hospital in 1979. She also appeared on Hong Kong cartoons.
