He plays important roles in such films as Warlock (1989) and his sequel Warlock: The Armageddon (1993), Arachnophobia (1990) and the highly controversial The Naked Lunch (1991) and Boxing Helena (1993). He has collaborated several times with director Mike Figgis, notably in Leaving Las Vegas (1995) and the experimental Timecode (2000). He also interprets the ghost of opera in the version made by Dario Argento (1998).
From the 2000s, he turned increasingly to television and appeared in recurring roles in the TV series Stargate SG-1 (2005), 24 hours chrono (2006), where he interpreted the villain head of season 5, Smallville (2009-10), where he plays Jor-El, and Crossbones (2014).
