Jazz guitarist who invented the single-string solo and who was also was the first musician to play an electrically-amplified violin.
Alfonzo “Lonnie” Johnson , born February 8, 1899 in New Orleans, Louisiana and died June 6, 1970 in Canada, was an American singer and guitarist, pioneer of blues and jazz .
Raised in a family of musicians, Johnson studied violin and guitar during his childhood. In 1917, he participated in a tour of England in a musical review, which probably saves his life. When he returned to New Orleans in 1919, he found a decimated family, with the exception of his brother James, by the great influenza pandemic of 1918.
In the early 1920s, Johnson worked with the Charlie Creath and Fate Marable bands on riverboats, and moved to St. Louis as early as 1925. There, he won an Okeh Records competition for him. . Under this label he made a series of recordings between 1925 and 1932, including guitar duets with Eddie Lang and vocal duets with Victoria Spivey. It was also in the 1920s that Johnson made appearances on the recordings of Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five, Duke Ellington’s orchestra, and the Chocolate Dandies, playing guitar solos note-to-note in an innovative style. which inspires future jazz guitarists like Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt and gives the guitar the role of soloist instrument in jazz.
Lonnie Johnson’s career is, however, fluctuating, which sometimes leads him to move away from the music. Between two major musical events, he finds himself forced to engage in domestic jobs, concierge or work in a foundry. While employed at the Philadelphia Benjamin Franklin Hotel in 1959, he was noticed by WHAT-FM disc jockey Chris Albertson. Albertson succeeds in assuring Johnson a commitment in Chicago to the Playboy club. Johnson then performs with Duke Ellington and his orchestra in large concerts at Town Hall in New York City.
He also toured Europe and recorded several albums for the Prestige Bluesville label several with Elmer Snowden and one with his vocal partner Okeh, Victoria Spivey. To his great regret, Johnson has always been cataloged as a blues artist. On this subject, speaking of Okeh’s competition: “I had a little song at the time but even now, I do not take it as seriously as my guitar playing, and I think I will have done ‘No matter what to record’: it was a blues competition, so I sang blues. “
Johnson died in Ontario, Canada, on June 16, 1970, of complications from a 1969 car accident.
Lonnie Johnson was a musician able to play very traditional blues, but also a forerunner of modern jazz and blues guitar with the introduction of note-to-note solos, this technical aspect rich in feeling has also inspired many guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and many others …
In 1997, he joined the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame posthumously.
