Suzanne Pleshette was born in Brooklyn, New York City. His grandparents were Jewish immigrants, three of them from Russia and one from Austria-Hungary. His mother, Geraldine (née Kaplan), was a dancer and artist, and her father, Eugene Pleshette, was a stage manager, network director, and director of Paramount Theater in Brooklyn. She graduated from Manhattan High School of the Performing Arts and then attended Syracuse University for a semester before attending Finch College.
She was the cousin of actor John Pleshette.
After starting her acting career, she made her Broadway debut in 1957.
She appeared in films in the early 1960s, such as Italian Love (Rome Adventure) (1962) by Delmer Daves and The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock (1963). Later she appeared in various television productions, often in minor roles, and played the role of Emily Hartley in The Bob Newhart Show from 1972 until 1978, receiving several Emmy nominations for her work.
Throughout her career, directed by Raoul Walsh, Henry Hathaway, Roger Corman and Byron Haskin, she has partnered with Tony Curtis, Steve McQueen, Rock Hudson, Burt Reynolds and James Garner, as well as Peter Ustinov, Maximilian Schell and Max von Sydow, Ray Milland and Melanie Griffith. Very popular in Disney comedies with Dean Jones, she lent her voice to animated films The Voyage of Chihiro and The Lion King 2: The Honor of the Tribe.
Pleshette married in Rome in 1964 with Troy Donahue, the marriage lasted eight months. His second marriage was with Texas oil entrepreneur Tom Gallagher, with whom she remained married from 1968 until her death from lung cancer on January 21, 2000. She miscarried at her wedding with Gallagher, and the couple never had children.
In 2001, she married Tom Poston. They remained married until his death by respiratory failure in Los Angeles on April 30, 2007.
She continued to film until 2004, and died in 2008 from lung cancer. She is buried at Hillside Memorial Park.
