Wayne Richard Embry (born March 26, 1937 in Springfield, Ohio) is a former American basketball player. He played for eleven years from 1959 to 1969. He played under the colors of the Cincinnati Royals, the Boston Celtics and the NBA Milwaukee Bucks.

Player career

He played at Miami University and Tecumseh High School in New Carlisle, Ohio.

He participated in five consecutive NBA All-Star Games (from 1961 to 1965) and won an NBA title with the Celtics in 1968.

Manager career

After retiring as a player, he became the first African American to become NBA General Manager, leading the Milwaukee Bucks (1971-1979), the Cleveland Cavaliers (1986-1999) and the Raptors of Toronto (in 2006). He was named NBA Executive of the Year in 1992 and 1998. These most memorable actions as general manager were the controversial 1975 transfer of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Los Angeles Lakers and the disastrous transfer of 1989 of Ron Harper’s Cleveland Cavaliers and two first draft rounds at the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Danny Ferry’s rights. This transfer penalized the Cavaliers hard during the 1990s. Abdul-Jabbar won five titles with the Lakers, while he won only one with the Bucks. The Cavaliers managed their best record in the regular season under the leadership of Embry, but never had success in the playoffs.

In 2004, Embry was hired as Senior Basketball Advisor by the Toronto Raptors in place of General Manager Rob Babcock. Embry was named after a single season in front of Babcock, while the board cited his lack of confidence in Babcock’s work. On January 26, 2006, Wayne was named interim “general manager” of the Raptors following the dismissal of Babcock.

In the month he acted as GM, Embry made two transfers. The first includes the pivot Aaron Williams sent to the New Orleans Hornets against the second rounds of draft 2006 and 2009. The second transfer sent Jalen Rose, a first round of draft and a sum of money undefined (around $ 3 million) to the New York Knicks in exchange for ex-pivot Raptors Antonio Davis. The motivation behind the transfer was to free up (Rose earning almost $ 15 million a year) to acquire an experienced pivot who could replace Chris Bosh.

When the Raptors hired Bryan Colangelo as new president and ” general manager ” on February 28, 2006, Embry returned to his role as Senior Advisor.

He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999 (as a contributor).
